Amber, Site Engineer
How long have you worked for Wessex Water?
Six and a half years.
How did you apply?
I found out about the job when I attended a careers fair being held at my school during sixth form. I applied through the Wessex Water website for the Higher-Level Apprenticeship which included uploading my CV and personal statement.
What attracted you to Wessex Water in the first place?
I was drawn to Wessex Water because of its reputation for having a welcoming work environment, and I was pleasantly surprised by the diverse range of job opportunities within the company.
The apprenticeship programme offered rotations across various engineering departments, which appealed to me as I aimed to broaden my knowledge and skills to understand the entire construction project process.
What does your job entail and what do you most enjoy about the role?
In my role as a Site Engineer, my responsibilities include identifying and establishing locations and levels for new infrastructure, maintaining quality standards throughout the project, and ensuring site health and safety requirements are followed. I find satisfaction in my job because it allows me to apply my engineering knowledge to challenges faced during the construction phase whilst being hands-on and working outdoors.
Tell us about your team and what you like most about working with them.
Within the Civils team, our collaboration extends to various other Sustainable, Operational and Engineering departments, which means effective team communication is key, given the dynamic nature of our work and the need to prioritise site safety. Engaging with the construction teams plays a large part of my job role as it is vital to provide guidance and clear information to successfully achieve completion. I enjoy being part of the site team as we witness the transformation of designs into physical infrastructures.
Why do you think Wessex Water is a great place to work?
Wessex Water stands out when it comes to its employees’ welfare, providing great opportunities for career development. There is also a focus on environmental and population sustainability. Within Wessex Water, there is a main focus on collaboration and innovation to encourage individuals to contribute significantly to the ever-evolving water industry. When you think about water companies, you only think of the repair and maintenance teams working in public places like roads, however, there is much more than meets the eye which I believe is one of the best things about working for Wessex Water.
What do you enjoy most when not working?
Despite my job requiring outdoor work, I thoroughly enjoy spending time outside during my leisure hours. Whether it's embarking on a long hike with my dog or heading to the coast for activities like swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, and indulging in fish and chips with a hot chocolate on the beach.
