Trainee Quantity Surveyor

How long have you worked for Wessex Water?

'I have worked for Wessex Water for nearly five years now. I started as a trainee quantity surveyor back in September 2015. I am just currently finishing my university degree and will be fully qualified within the next month.'

What attracted you to Wessex Water in the first place?

'I worked for a subcontractor of Wessex Water in my previous role and so I knew a few people that were already working here who had told me it was a great place to work. I wanted to develop a career and the trainee scheme offered by Wessex Water seemed like the perfect way to do it.'

What does your job entail and what do you most enjoy about the role?

'My job involves writing and managing contracts from the tender stage to completion. I spend a lot of time on site visiting contractors and auditing their costs. I work with the internal construction team forecasting and placing orders and I provide financial reports for my schemes. My favourite part of the role is the variety. One day I am out on site in full PPE talking to contractors and operatives and the next day I’m in an office working on spreadsheets and analysing costs.

Tell me about your team and what you like most about working with your colleagues at Wessex Water?

The networks team that I was part of for four years is a great team to be a part of. All my colleagues are so supportive with both academic and on the job learning. They helped me to settle into the company and I felt part of the group straight away.

I am currently working on the North Bristol Relief Sewer project and my team includes many brilliant people with various roles. The mixture of disciplines allows everyone to help and we all learn from each other. Work is so much more enjoyable when you have fun at the same time!'

Why do you think Wessex Water is a great place to work?

'Wessex Water is a great place to work as the company really cares about getting the best out of their employees. Whether that be through training and development, mental health and wellbeing services or through flexible working due to home requirements.

Employees are rewarded for going above and beyond through recognition from senior management in various ways.

There is a friendly atmosphere and a great sense of community throughout the company, which is extended to the general public through volunteering days.'

What do you enjoy most when not working?

'When not working, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, especially if there’s a BBQ involved! I love to travel and explore new places in the sunshine. My partner and I enjoy eating out at restaurants, going to the beach and going for a walk. I also love shopping!'
