Jason, Construction Manager
How long have you worked for Wessex Water?
I joined Wessex Water 13 years ago as a Construction Manager and still very much enjoy the role.
How did you apply?
The role was identified to me by a recruitment agency I was registered with. I mentioned to them that I was keen to work at Wessex Water and to contact me when a vacancy came up, which they did. I applied and got the role of Construction Manager.
What attracted you to Wessex Water in the first place?
I previously worked for Wessex Water as a contractor and always wanted to work directly for the company as my friends who worked for them always had good things to say. As I live in the Wessex Water region, it has always been a well-known employer, and having spent many years working away from home it seemed like the right move.
What does your job entail and what do you most enjoy about the role?
My role entails helping to manage the divisional Repair and Maintenance (R&M) supply activities, managing and supporting a team of supervisors and their depots to ensure their repair teams operate to maximum performance and that company health and safety policies, internal operating policies, director general policies, and targets are met.
The aspects of the role I enjoy are the challenges that change day by day, such as repairing burst mains, managing recruitment, setting budgets, and meeting with internal partners.
Tell us about your team and what you like most about working with them.
Within my team, I look after approximately 50 employees across three geographical areas, from Operatives to Lorry Drivers covering two highway bodies completing approx. 9,000 jobs a year.
Working at Wessex Water has a real family feel and I enjoy the collaborative working between different departments, all working together to meet the same goal. Wessex Water has a very experienced workforce that brings a depth of knowledge to every area of the business which is invaluable when overcoming problems that we face daily.
Why do you think Wessex Water is a great place to work?
Wessex Water really looks after its employees and has a great focus on health and wellbeing. There are lots of opportunities to really shine.
Wessex Water offers a great package of employment from a competitive salary, great benefits, endless training opportunities, and great out-of-work social events for the whole family.
Having worked here for a number of years, I think it’s the people who work here that make this a great place to work.
What do you enjoy most when not working?
Whilst not at work I enjoy running, going to the gym, and keeping fit. I have a passion for rugby including supporting Bath Rugby and have previously been a season ticket holder.
I also have a VW campervan and I regularly enjoy spending time with my family exploring various locations in the UK where we surf, paddleboard, and BBQ.
Something else I enjoy is DIY and learning new skills from roofing, building walls and installing kitchens. My latest project has been to renovate our family home which I have been working on for the last four years.
