Jordan, Project Engineer
How long have you worked for Wessex Water?
I have been working at Wessex Water since August 2019.
How did you apply?
The job was advertised on Wessex Water's careers webpage.
What attracted you to Wessex Water in the first place?
I had decided to pursue a career as a Civil Engineer through the apprenticeship route. There were several reasons why I was drawn to Wessex Water in particular. Firstly, in 2017, the company was one of the top 100 apprenticeship employers at the National Apprenticeship Awards. Secondly, they recognise that educating the next generation about sustainability and the wellbeing of our environment is crucial for improving efficiency in the utility industry.
What does your job entail and what do you most enjoy about the role?
I am pursuing a Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering while working for the Sewer Rehabilitation team.
A typical week involves one day at the university and four days working in the office or at a construction site. I enjoy the variety in my job as it presents unique challenges that require problem-solving skills, eg, customer queries or project adjustments.
I also exercise my passion for driving when I travel to and from different sites in our region.
Tell us about your team and what you like most about working with them
There is a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork within the Sewer Rehabilitation team. My team is composed of dedicated individuals who are passionate about providing safe sewerage systems for our community.
Each member brings a unique set of skills and experiences that contribute to our shared goal of ensuring water quality for all. Everyone is willing to lend a helping hand, share knowledge and support each other in achieving our objectives. The positive and collaborative work environment that we have cultivated makes coming to work each day a rewarding experience.
Why do you think Wessex Water is a great place to work?
Your career is what you choose to make it. They have an internal careers team that can help you find a job role within the company that best suits what you're looking for.
Wessex Water is a customer-driven company as we value our customers and continue to maintain a positive relationship with communities and the local environment by going the extra mile. For example, the numerous annual volunteering projects that we undertake, from restoring wildlife habitats to installing water refill points.
What do you enjoy most when not working?
When I am not at work, I enjoy going to the gym, playing rugby at my local club, hiking and socialising with family and friends.
What qualifications did you need to get onto your apprenticeship? And what was the course like?
The minimum qualification required for my apprenticeship was a Level 4 HNC in Construction and the Built Environment. The coursework within the apprenticeship was challenging but manageable.
The assessments were made easier by the resources available to me, such as the lecturers, my colleagues and online resources. Time management is crucial because knowing when to prioritise coursework and work is pivotal for completing your apprenticeship programme and achieving success in your job role.
