Organic Chemistry Laboratory Manager

How long have you worked for Wessex Water?

'My career with Wessex Water started 30 years ago when I did a weeks' work experience in the lab. I then joined as a trainee analyst… and loved it. All that equipment and instruments to experiment with!'

What does your job entail and what do you most enjoy about the role?

'I am now responsible for the Organic Chemistry analytical activities. I have a wide range of day to day duties such as managing people and equipment, allocating resources, reviewing and setting new policies, providing advice to colleagues and customers and investigating analytical, quality or health and safety issues and improvements. I still do lab bench work occasionally too :).'

Tell us about your team and what you like most about working with your colleagues at Wessex Water?

'There are 12 of us ranging in experience from an apprentice to my senior scientists. They are a very talented and committed group and we have established a wonderful culture of mutual trust and respect.

I am a Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) mentor for Chartered Chemist and Registered Scientist, which is rewarding and I enjoy developing my team and constantly improving the lab operations and capabilities.'

Why do you think Wessex Water is a great place to work?

'You’ll find there is a feeling of professionalism throughout the business here and the commitment to be the best at what we do is something that really inspires me to give my best.

Wessex Water provides great development opportunities for everyone. It has supported my development by providing great training, paying for my degree studies and supporting my professional status as a Chartered Chemist.'

What do you enjoy most when not working?

'When I’m not at work, I can be found coaching football and recently completed my UEFA B football coaching qualification. I also sing and play guitar in a rock band! I used to play the violin too, but I have now been banned from playing it in the house!'
