Matthew, Construction Manager
How long have you worked for Wessex Water?
I joined Wessex Water 16 years ago at the age of 21 as a Trainee Site Engineer.
How did you apply?
I was recruited via an agency.
What attracted you to Wessex Water in the first place?
I came from a self-employed background, with very few academic qualifications. I was working away from home on contracts for projects that would come to an end with little notice. I was attracted to Wessex Water because they were able to offer job security, short commutes as well as training and progression.
What does your job entail and what do you most enjoy about the role?
As a Construction Manager I provide design, program, commercial and constructability advice during the planning phases of construction projects, with a focus on health and safety, environmental and sustainability.
As the project moves into construction, I then lead the delivery of the construction phase, monitoring all aspects and ensuring stakeholders are well informed.
I also work with a team of Construction Managers who collectively review and manage the operational aspects of construction delivery. This includes the line management and recruitment of staff, ensuring they have the correct skills and training, as well as access to the right systems, tools and vehicles required to carry out their roles.
Tell us about your team and what you like most about working with them.
There are five Construction Managers in my team and I find we are all equally valuable and appreciated. We support each other and the banters pretty good!
Why do you think Wessex Water is a great place to work?
I think Wessex Water is a great place to work because they value all their employees, provide high levels of support and training, and offer opportunities for development. They have supported me with further education including most recently my Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 qualification.
What do you enjoy most when not working?
I have three young children, so most of my spare time is focused on them. As a family we regularly enjoy outdoor activities together, such as camping, hiking, bike rides and trips to the forest of Dean. But we also enjoy a movie night with a takeaway and popcorn.
I regularly go to the gym and coach a local youth rugby team, which my son has played for since he was five.
