Mollie, Civil Engineering Technician Apprentice
How long have you worked for us?
I joined Wessex Water but now work for its sister company, YTL Construction. I have worked here for 2 years and 5 months.
What attracted you to Wessex Water in the first place?
My uncle works for another water company and suggested that I apply for a role at Wessex Water. When I looked online, I saw the variety of projects they were involved in, which really interested me.
What does your job entail and what do you enjoy most about it?
I work as a site engineer for YTL Construction on Wessex Water projects on pipelines and water recycling centres. I use engineering equipment to mark out points for structures and provide levels and specifications for ground workers. I also use technical software to present designs or make adjustments when needed. The thing I enjoy most is being outdoors and solving problems.
Tell us about your team and what you like most about working with them
My team is great to work with. I’ve been with them for a year now, so I’ve built strong relationships with them. They’re always willing to help and offer advice when I need it.
What is it like working at YTL UK?
YTL UK really looks after its employees. You can progress and even change career paths if you want to explore a different role, all while staying within the company. The teams are supportive and always provide the resources you need to succeed.
What qualifications did you need for your apprenticeship? And what was the course like?
When I joined, the main requirement was English and maths as base qualifications. Good grades help, but they mostly look at you as a person. My course lasted two years and covered everything you need to know as a civil engineer, plus additional modules on roads and housing. It was assignment-based, so you’re graded on your work rather than exams. And there’s always support available if you need it.
